Know your skin before you do anything to it!

Skin Structure

1. Basically skin is divided into outer layer called epidermis and inner layer called dermis.
2. The epidermis of face is itself divided into 4 layers shown in the figure below.

Skin Lipid Barrier Layer

1. The top layers of epidermis form a protective layer called Skin Lipid Barrier Layer. This is the layer to protect the skin from TEWL ( transepidermal waler loss) so that the skin remains healthy and moisturized, and also to prevent the entrance of harmful microorganisms into the body.

2. When the Skin Lipid Barrier Layer is damaged, cracks happened, the nerve endings in the skin will be irritated and TEWL will be high, this is where you skin gets all the itch, redness, swellings, besides being dry and dehydrated.

Skin Penetrability

1. Do you know that the human skin is designed to be largely impenetrable?
2. Basically only about 0.3% of any skincare products applied topically are able to penetrate the skin!
3. 99.7% remains on the topical skin layer mostly as emollient for hydrating and moisturizing purposes!
4. So all the deeper skin layers are largely untended!

Skin Problems

1. Skin problems such as acne, scars, big pores, pigmentation, wrinkles, fine lines and sagginess, the sources of problems are found underneath the skin and thus need to be solved from within.
2. Any topical applications only alleviate the symptoms but not really able to solve the problems due to impenetrability to deeper skin layer.
3. Thus a methodology has to be deployed in order to reach out to the problematic layers.
